Ubaldo Jimenez Throws First Rockies No-Hitter

Ubaldo Jimenez Throws First Rockies No-Hitter – Ubaldo Jimenez is proving that he is one of the best pitchers in the league and his no-hitter today just backs that fact up. Jimenez, who was the hardest throwing starting pitcher last year averaging 96.1 miles per hour while hitting triple digits consistently, was just blowing fastballs by the Braves today in route of a 4-0 no-hitter victory.

If you didn’t get a chance to watch the game, you’ll be able to see the highlights either at mlb.com or on just about any sports channel on television. But Jimenez finished the game with 128 pitches (72 for strikes), he walked six batters and struck out seven. On top of that, he outhit the entire Braves lineup going 1-4 with an RBI single in the 4th inning.

Jimenez was in control through the entire game and the only time people were really holding their breath on this no-hit bid was in the 7th inning when a couple of fly balls to center that was caught by amazing dives by Dexter Fowler. He ended the game getting Braves’ Brian McCann on a ground ball out to first.

Jimenez’s no-hitter helped cross off the Rockies as one of the remaining teams without a no-hitter in franchise history. The other remaining teams without a no-hitter are the New York Mets, San Diego Padres and the Tampa Bay Rays. For the record, the Washington Nationals haven’t thrown one yet but the team came from the Montreal Expos and they did previously.

Jimenez is now 3-0 to start the 2011-2011 season and he’s not only becoming known as a ridiculously powerful fastball pitcher but a great overall one.

Look out Lincecum, Jimenez is going to challenge you for the NL Cy Young!
